10 Tips to jumpstart your school's social media

You’ve probably heard about how social media marketing is the next big thing in generating quality leads and enrollments for your school. Here are 10 tips that can help you jumpstart your efforts.

1.Start a fan page.
There are plenty of people out there that absolutely love your school. Let them show it by becoming a fan of your school on Facebook. It can become a central hub for all of your school’s social media activity.
2.Use innovative applications to get people to interact.
If you look around online, you’ll discover that people spend an incredible amount of time on games and applications within Facebook and other social media sites. If you develop your own applications, you can tap into this huge segment of social media users, and keep your school at the forefront of their minds.
3.Post relevant and timely content.
Content on your site has a shelf life. Keeping your content fresh shows your school is active and up to date. As a result, people who visit your social media site will reward you by always coming back for more
4.Listen to your audience.
When people in your community speak, listen. Make sure to listen and analyze what they have to say and be ready to respond in the same way you would if a student asked a question or expressed concerns in person.
5.Strive for quality over quantity.
Always strive to have meaningful conversations with members of your community. Social media is not about trying to reach as many people as possible via mass media. Treat each member of your community as an important individual. If you do this, you will develop a very loyal following for your school.
6.Create an upcoming events section.
People want to know what is going on at your school. Keeping an updated calendar on your social media profiles will help gather more interest in your events.
7.Use multiple social media platforms.
One size does not fit all when it comes to social media. You may need to expand beyond Facebook to other sites like MySpace, Twitter, or LinkedIn, depending on your target audience.
8.Monitor daily.
Social media requires daily monitoring to ensure the highest quality interactions. You will need to be aware of what is happening, and be prepared to respond as soon as possible.
9.Take advantage of graduates and students.
Your graduates and current students can help you build a strong community. They already know and love your school, and will be willing to share their knowledge with prospects.
10.Build your brand.
Make sure to tie your social media to your current branding. You will want to use consistent colors, logos, and other style guide elements to ensure that your page looks professional.
