The growth of social media over this past year prove that social media is not “just a fad.” In fact, it continues to confirm that communication methods are continuing to shift. Can your school keep up? Here are some statistics to show you that it is no longer an option to be on social media:
• A year ago the fastest growing segment of users for Facebook was middle-aged women. Today the fastest growing segment of users on Facebook is college-aged kids.
• In 2010 the number of users that accessed Facebook from their mobile device was 60 million. In 2011 that number increased to 200 million – a 200 percent growth!
• In 2010 Facebook users shared 3.5 billion pieces of content weekly. In 2011 Facebook users shared 7 billion pieces of content weekly – a 100% growth!
• In 2010 the number of tweets per day was 27 million. That number increased to 95 million in 2011 – a 252% growth!
• 80% of companies use social media for recruitment… 95% of them use LinkedIn!

So maybe the social networking sites that are extremely popular today, such as Facebook and Twitter, won’t exist in five years, but other sites will. Think back to how popular MySpace was just a few years ago. When Facebook came along, MySpace couldn’t keep up and slowly became less and less popular. Your school’s online marketing strategy needs to be solid. If it isn’t, you aren’t reaching your target audience and are missing out on leads.
