If the Pilgrim’s had Social Media…

It’s hard to remember life without cell phones, computers, internet and even social networking.  It’s amazing that technology has become a place where a seventeen year-old high school student can have an idea for a website, program it in three days, and quickly turn it into an online social networking craze used by millions. Aka: the invention of “Chatroulette”.

And how about the evolution of social media.  Online social interactions and building relationships through the use of internet tools. Writing content, in as few as 140 characters, that is remarkable, unique, and even newsworthy.

With Thanksgiving right around the corner; a day full of what is now known as binge-eating and football, it got me thinking… what if the Pilgrims had social media?

If the Pilgrim’s had Facebook

.

If the Pilgrim’s had Foursquare

“I’m at a Rock (Plantation Road, Plymouth) w/ 101 others”

“You just unlocked the ‘I found a new country’ badge!”

.

If the Pilgrim’s had Twitter

@JohnSmith: The #Mayflower just hit a huge rock, man!

@Pocahontas: Going to celebrate our plentiful harvest!!!

OK, enough of that! If the pilgrims’ were this technologically advanced, we’d be flying spaceships by now.  I once heard somewhere that social media was like people powered advertising, and I agree.  Social media is all about building relationship by learning and interacting with an online community, exchanging user-generated content, and creating authority and value.  When I think back to the “old days”, before social media, even before the internet, it makes me wonder how dull our lives would be without the influence of such creative people around us and, this Thanksgiving; it makes me thankful for social media.
